Despite the wish for homogenisation on the part of nation builders of China - the Central Kingdom that has now turned to embrace a market economy with 'Chinese characteristics' - Mongolian ethnicity in Yunnan, like ethnicities in other places of this country, is strengthened due to increasing tourism and contacts facilitated by modern technologies of communication and transportation. Different cultural elements and different ethnic groups gather, help build, and celebrate, a renewed Mongolian identity.
